Sofia Produce, known commercially as Trufresh, is initiating a recall of all sizes of fresh cantaloupes distributed to numerous U.S. states in a specific week of October, following concerns about potential salmonella contamination.
This Arizona-based company supplied the cantaloupes to 10 U.S. states and Canada through various retail channels, with a possibility of them reaching additional states, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
These cantaloupes were available for purchase from Oct. 16 to Oct. 23 and were presented in cardboard containers bearing the "Malichita" brand.
The FDA highlighted that these cantaloupes are also identified by stickers that include individual price look-up (PLU) codes. The top section of the sticker is white, featuring "Malichita" in black text, while the lower section is black displaying the number 4050 in white. This number is adjacent to the phrase '"Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique."
The FDA warns that salmonella can cause severe and potentially fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Healthy individuals infected by salmonella may suffer symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
In uncommon cases, salmonella can lead to more serious conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Regarding the cantaloupe recall:
The FDA advises anyone who has bought a recalled cantaloupe to either dispose of it or return it to the store for a refund. If you suspect illness from consuming a recalled product, it's important to consult a healthcare professional.
If you're uncertain whether the cantaloupe you have is part of the recall, the FDA recommends contacting the retailer for confirmation.
