Whoopi Goldberg Sends a Message to the Pope About Her Gay and Divorced Friends

"The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg shared on Monday that she had met Pope Francis the previous week and gifted him memorabilia from her film "Sister Act." Goldberg mentioned she presented him with items from the movie, and co-host Sunny Hostin added that the pope had specifically asked for them.

"He is exactly what I hoped he would be, which is a pope for all people regardless of religion, which I really appreciated, and I wanted to thank him for all of my gay friends, and for all of my divorced friends because he basically has said, listen. God loves you no matter what. Come back to the church. I appreciated that," Goldberg said, reflecting on her visit.

The program aired footage of Goldberg's interactions with Pope Francis, capturing the pontiff examining the "Sister Act" memorabilia. This renowned 1992 comedy stars Goldberg as a lounge singer who, under witness protection, masquerades as a nun, rejuvenating the convent's choir. At the end of the movie, the choir gives a performance for the pope.

"One of the best things you can do for people is to help them have joy and to make them laugh," Francis said to Goldberg after looking through the "Sister Act" items.

As the hosts conversed about Goldberg's meeting, Hostin described Francis as "progressive for a pope."

Echoing Hostin's sentiments, Goldberg commented, "He's very progressive. He's a human being as it turns out, which is what I really appreciate. He strives to be compassionate towards everyone. He recognizes that everyone, including himself, has imperfections. Yet he believes that we should all try to bring out the best in ourselves."

Referring to her time in Catholic school, Goldberg expressed, "I don't know if it would get me to go to church," but her recent visit provided her with a "good reason to not abandon."

Goldberg finished by describing it as "an extraordinary experience."
