During a press briefing on Thursday, the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, made a mistake by accidentally referring to President Biden as "President Obama."
As Jean-Pierre was making announcements at the beginning of the briefing, her slip of the tongue caused a burst of laughter and surprise among the press corps.
"So today, as you all saw just an hour or so ago, President Obama announced that—Pardon me, President Biden!" Jean-Pierre said as reporters were shocked. "Whoa! Ahem, that is news. I know, we're going back not forwards. We've gotta go forwards."

After the slip-up, Jean-Pierre proceeded to announce the nominee to lead the World Bank on behalf of President Biden.
Karine Jean-Pierre's slip-up referring to President Biden as "President Obama" occurred amidst ongoing rumors regarding Biden's plans for the 2024 presidential election. Despite the White House's assertion that Biden "intends to run," some Democrats have expressed doubt due to his age. Many expected Biden to make an announcement following his State of the Union speech earlier this month, but no such announcement has been made.
While questions about Biden's age and potential candidacy persist, former President Obama has previously defended Biden's mental health. In response to criticisms of Biden's performance from his own former White House physician, Obama publicly spoke out in support of Biden. These comments demonstrate a continued friendship between the two former leaders, as well as a willingness to defend one another in the face of political attacks.
In October, Biden acknowledged that concerns about his age are "completely valid."
"I think it’s a legitimate thing to be concerned about anyone’s age, including mine. That’s totally legitimate. But I think the best way to make the judgment is to, you know, watch me. Am I slowing up? Am I — don’t have the same pace?" Biden said during an interview with MSNBC.
At the age of his inauguration, Biden became the oldest person to assume the presidency, and he will be approaching 82 years old on the day of the 2024 election.
