The study, conducted by the University of Cincinnati (UC), involved 30 participants aged 50 to 65 who showed signs of mild cognitive impairment.
The study participants were instructed not to consume any berries. Instead, they mixed a supplement powder into their water each morning, as per a press release from the University of Cincinnati.
This powder was strawberry-based for half of the group.
Subsequently, the participants underwent tests assessing their memory, cognitive abilities, mood, depression indicators, and metabolic data.
The study found that individuals who consumed the strawberry-infused powder exhibited "reduced memory interference" in contrast to those who did not.
"Reduced memory interference refers to less confusion of semantically related terms on a word-list learning test," said lead researcher Robert Krikorian, professor emeritus in the UC College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, in a press release, per Fox News.
"This phenomenon generally is thought to reflect better executive control in terms of resisting intrusion of non-target words during the memory testing."
Participants who consumed the strawberry powder also showed decreased symptoms of depression, enhanced emotional regulation, and superior problem-solving abilities compared to the placebo group, as observed by Krikorian.
