Elon Musk Endorses Candidate for House Speaker

On Thursday, Twitter CEO Elon Musk endorsed Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to be the next House Speaker as members of Congress continue to negotiate and vote for the leadership role.

Musk tweeted, "Kevin McCarthy should be Speaker." In a subsequent tweet several hours later, he asked, "If not McCarthy, then seriously who?"

Representative McCarthy, who served as House minority leader before the GOP won a majority in November, appeared likely to become the nation's third-most powerful elected official until a small group of Republicans refused to support him in a series of votes this week.

According to a report from Axios based on multiple Republican sources, McCarthy has given the small group of Republicans many of the concessions they have sought, including allowing for one member to introduce a motion to vacate rather than five, which would make it easier for lawmakers to replace McCarthy should he become the presiding officer. He also promised to hold votes on term limits and border security, and to grant the House Freedom Caucus more seats on the influential House Rules Committee.
