Democratic Governor Breaks With Party to Commend Trump for Tapping RFK Jr. For HHS

Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis had kind words for President-elect Trump’s choice of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next secretary of Health and Human Services.

Polis highlighted Kennedy's efforts in Colorado, recalling his role in blocking vaccine mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.

“He helped us defeat vaccine mandates in Colorado in 2019 and will help make America healthy again by shaking up HHS and FDA,” Polis said in a social media post.

Polis emphasized his hopes for Kennedy's focus on personal vaccine choice over bans. He also expressed optimism about Kennedy’s ability to challenge big pharma and corporate agriculture.

Trump’s announcement of Kennedy’s nomination sparked immediate reactions. Praise and criticism poured in from across the political spectrum.

In his statement, Trump pledged to restore the Department of Health and Human Services as a symbol of scientific excellence. He criticized the influence of large corporations on public health and vowed reform.

"Mr. Kennedy will restore these Agencies to the traditions of Gold Standard Scientific Research,” Trump wrote. “He will end the Chronic Disease epidemic and Make America Great and Healthy Again!"

Kennedy’s transition from a Democratic presidential campaign to endorsing Trump has surprised many. He also made headlines during Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden last month.

Speaking at the rally, Kennedy harshly criticized the Democratic Party. He accused it of promoting war, supporting corporate interests, and dividing Americans.

"It’s the party of Wall Street. It’s the party of Bill Gates," Kennedy declared, listing controversial endorsements and actions he opposed.

This isn’t Kennedy’s first time being considered for a major government role. In 2008, President-elect Obama reportedly considered him for head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Polis, despite his past critiques of Trump, struck a cooperative tone. He stated his willingness to work with the administration on shared goals, particularly health reform.

"I look forward to partnering with him to truly make America healthy again," Polis wrote.
