At midnight, instead of celebrating the start of 2023 with toasts and kisses, Don Lemon and revelers in New Orleans were seen dancing to Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up" on CNN.
After the Central time zone countdown was missed, spectators of the network's New Year's Eve took to social media to express their reactions.
"CNN has redeemed itself by ringing in the new year in New Orleans with ‘Back That Azz Up’ and not acknowledging the stroke of midnight in any way," Timothy Burke tweeted.

According to Business Insider, "As the clock ticked over to the new year, Lemon is seen throwing beaded necklaces into the dancing crowd. Only moments later, it appears that he realizes the countdown and announcement had been missed."
Due to the controversy surrounding host Andy Cohen's admission to being "overserved" during the previous year's broadcast, the network had already been under scrutiny and had implemented a ban on alcohol on-air.
Some viewers speculated that the technical mistake this year may have been a result of Lemon not being able to hear his producers through his earpiece.
We got to see exactly what happens when a reporter’s IFB (audio connection to producer) goes out.@donlemon complained about it since at least 11:30, but nothing was done.
