Long ago Whoopi Goldberg was considered a comedian.
Now, Goldberg has gained a reputation as an aspiring suppressor, seeking to curb the unpredictability and novelty that enable authentic comedy to thrive.
As the spectators of "The View" displayed slight amusement on Tuesday upon hearing a joke recounted by former Vice President Mike Pence, co-host Goldberg halted the entertainment with a stern reprimand. She attempted to chastise the audience by asserting the joke lacked humor, insinuating its failure was due to its association with Republicans.

“Pence claimed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg took two months of, quote, ‘maternity leave,’ during the nationwide airline crisis, Which makes Pete the only person in human history to have a child, and everyone else gets postpartum depression,” Goldberg said.
“Now, I will point out, this joke wasn’t funny when Tucker Carlson did it, it wasn’t funny when Lauren Boebert did it, it’s just not funny. It’s just not a funny joke.”
Pence, rumored to be contemplating a bid for the Republican nomination the following year, shared the joke at the yearly Gridiron Club Dinner in Washington on Saturday. This event brings together politicians and prominent Washington media personalities, who are anticipated to poke fun at both their adversaries and themselves. (The New York Times reported that Pence even joked about his own speculated presidential aspirations.)
The actual issue for Goldberg isn't the joke's lack of humor. In fact, it was sufficiently amusing to elicit audible laughter from a segment of her audience.
Goldberg's concern is that the joke, besides being amusing for a political remark, strikes right at the heart of the Biden administration's transportation secretary's negligence. As a previous Democratic presidential nomination candidate who is very likely to seek the presidency once more, the precise satire is something Goldberg aims to suppress, as it casts Democrats in an unfavorable light.
