Trump Joke Draws Chuckles Just Moments Into UN Speech

President Donald Trump got world leaders laughing almost immediately when he stepped onto the stage at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

He cracked jokes about a broken escalator in the UN building and a malfunctioning teleprompter right in front of him. “Thank you very much, I very much appreciate it,” Trump said as the room applauded.

“And I don’t mind making this speech without a teleprompter because the teleprompter is not working,” he added, sparking laughter across the hall. “I can only say that whoever’s operating this teleprompter is in big trouble.”

He kept the humor going when talking about his frustrations with the UN. “I ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders of these countries and never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help in finalizing the deal,” he said.

“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle,” Trump continued. “If the first lady wasn’t in great shape she would’ve fallen. But she’s in great shape, we’re both in good shape. We both stood.”

“These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he said, again drawing laughter.

Trump also shifted to serious points, praising his administration’s push for peace. He urged European nations to stop tolerating illegal immigration and slammed the global climate change agenda as a “con job.”
