The family of an 8-year-old boy got the surprise of a lifetime when former President Trump greeted him during a rally in New York.
Liam, who has a rare brain disorder, was already thrilled after receiving a birthday letter from Trump. His reaction went viral.
"It's a pipe dream," said Liam's dad, holding back tears. "To thank the world for helping my son come this far and making his dream come true. Meeting Donald Trump, his hero, was definitely one of his biggest dreams."
Doctors had warned Liam's family he might never walk or talk, according to his mother, Siobhan.
"My buddy here plays ice hockey, does roller hockey, and does great in school. We’re so proud of him," she said in an interview before Trump’s rally near their Long Island home.
Liam has been a Trump supporter since he was 18 months old, she added.
After receiving the letter, Liam’s family was invited to Trump’s rally as VIP guests. They sat close to the stage, and Liam received an even bigger surprise: a personal meeting with Trump.
"I'm supposed to be on that stage, but this is your best present," Trump told Liam privately. "This is the best present you'll ever have."
Trump handed Liam a box and joked, "There's real good stuff in there."
The two took a photo together, and Trump told him, "We're gonna have that picture for life, you and I."
During the rally, Trump thanked Liam and his family for attending, pointing them out to the cheering crowd.
"I’m in tears," Liam's mom said afterward.
Liam’s viral moment began when a video showed him opening Trump’s letter. He was filled with emotion as he read it.
"This is a side of Donald Trump nobody sees," said Kevin Smith, who shared the video. "Most people only see his public persona."
In the video, Liam is handed an envelope by his mom. As she reads Trump’s birthday wishes, Liam holds back tears.
"Thank you, I love you," Liam said, signing "I love you" to the camera.
