Oprah Winfrey is openly discussing her use of weight loss medication.
Having initially declined to acknowledge the use of medication in achieving her recent weight loss, Winfrey has now openly shared that she incorporates it as one of several methods in her health and fitness regimen.
The ex-talk show host, often a subject of speculation regarding her weight, shared with People her reactions to such comments, stating, "I didn’t feel angry. I felt sad. I felt hurt. I swallowed the shame. I accepted that it was my fault."
She said, "It was public sport to make fun of me for 25 years. I have been blamed and shamed, and I blamed and shamed myself."
She said her weight"occupied five decades of space in my brain, yo-yoing and feeling like why can’t I just conquer this thing, believing willpower was my failing."
During a panel on weight that she hosted for her website, Oprah Daily, over the summer, she developed the understanding that she shouldn't have been so hard on herself.
In a segment released in September, she expressed her initial skepticism about weight loss drugs. She said, "When I first started hearing about the weight loss drugs, at the same time, I was going through knee surgery, and I felt, ‘I’ve got to do this on my own.' Because if I take the drug, that’s the easy way out."
She further clarified her stance to People, acknowledging her self-blame for being overweight and recognizing obesity as a disease beyond mere willpower. "I realized I’d been blaming myself all these years for being overweight, and I have a predisposition that no amount of willpower is going to control," she stated. "Obesity is a disease. It’s not about willpower — it's about the brain."
Subsequently, her physician recommended a medication for her, although she chose not to disclose the exact name of the prescription she uses.
"The fact that there's a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift, and not something to hide behind and once again be ridiculed for," Winfrey said. "I’m absolutely done with the shaming from other people and particularly myself."
Nevertheless, the medication is not the only factor contributing to her weight loss. She mentioned that following her knee surgery rehabilitation in 2021, she began hiking frequently and implemented various other changes in her lifestyle.
