Modern "art" has increasingly adorned our cities with controversial statues and monuments, such as the statue of George Floyd and a phallic monument dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One example is a demonic figure on a New York City courthouse that is said to represent Ruth Bader Ginsburg and abortion.
The statue in question is an 8-foot tall sculpture depicting a Medusa-like creature with tentacles emerging from a lotus flower. It features Ruth Bader Ginsburg's signature lace collar and is located near statues of Moses, Confucius, and Zoroaster.

The sculpture was created by 53-year-old artist Shahzia Sikander. According to her, the work is "part of an urgent and necessary cultural reckoning underway as New York, along with cities across the world, reconsiders traditional representations of power in public spaces and recasts civic structures to better reflect 21st-century social mores." Sikander sees the sculpture as a representation of a "fierce woman and a form of resistance in a space that has historically been dominated by patriarchal representation."
The statue is called "NOW" because, according to Sikander, it was deemed necessary at the present moment. It is meant to address the current issues surrounding women's reproductive rights and autonomy, which is a contentious issue for the left wing.
"NOW" is part of a series of works by Sikander, and is said to be in dialogue with another sculpture of hers called "Witness" located in Madison Square Park. The latter sculpture is 18 feet tall and also considered to be intimidating. Its dome-shaped skirt is meant to reflect the stained-glass dome of the courthouse and symbolizes the breaking of the "legal glass ceiling."
It's unclear what specific "glass ceiling" is referred to in the context of the sculpture, as there are currently four female justices on the Supreme Court. However, it's possible that the reference is not limited to a certain number of female justices on the court, but rather represents a broader societal issue of gender inequality in the legal profession and beyond.
