Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared visibly irritated on Wednesday after CNN’s Jake Tapper pressed her about insider trading allegations tied to her and her husband.
During a live appearance on The Lead, Tapper brought up President Donald Trump’s accusation earlier that day, claiming Pelosi enriched herself through “inside information.” Pelosi snapped the moment Tapper tried to read the full quote.
“Why do you have to read that?” she interrupted sharply. “We’re here to talk about the 60th anniversary of Medicaid. That’s what I agreed to come to talk about.”
Tapper calmly explained he was giving her a chance to respond directly to the claim. “He accused you of insider trading. What’s your response to that?”
“That’s ridiculous,” Pelosi fired back. “I support banning members of Congress from trading stocks. Not because I think people are doing anything wrong, but because it gives the public more confidence.”
She then tried to distance herself from the issue entirely: “I’m not into it. My husband is, but it isn’t anything to do with anything insider.” She also accused Trump of “projecting” and demanded to “not give him any more time.”
Pelosi pivoted to praising her family and slammed Trump for “mocking” the violent 2022 hammer attack on her husband Paul. “I’d rather not go into some of my other complaints about him right now,” she said.
Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Sen. Josh Hawley’s HONEST Act passed out of committee with bipartisan support. The bill would ban members of Congress and their spouses — plus the president and vice president — from trading stocks while in office. It was originally introduced as the PELOSI Act.
Pelosi issued a statement in support of the measure, calling for “transparency, accountability, and tough enforcement” to restore public trust. Still, critics continue pointing to her husband’s multimillion-dollar semiconductor trades in 2022 — made just days before a congressional subsidy vote.
