Minnesota state officials are facing tough questions after claiming a controversial Minneapolis daycare was closed, only for reporters to find it open for business hours later. Commissioner Tikki Brown previously stated that the "Quality Learing Center" had been inactive for some time and that her staff found no evidence of fraud.
The facility gained national attention after a viral video by journalist Nick Shirley highlighted the misspelled sign and questioned its legitimacy. Shirley’s investigation suggested that several Twin Cities centers were receiving millions in taxpayer funds without enough activity to justify the payments.
Despite the state’s claim that the center was shuttered, at least 20 children were observed arriving at the facility on Monday afternoon. When approached for comment, staff members reportedly responded aggressively and ordered reporters to leave the premises.
The owners of the center, which has since corrected the typo on its sign, maintain that the allegations are a misunderstanding. They claim the facility remains operational on a late-day schedule, despite the conflicting reports from state oversight officials.
