McDonald's Revives Iconic Menu Item After 30 Years for America's 250th Birthday

McDonald's is bringing back a dessert that nostalgic customers have been begging to see on nationwide menus for decades.

The fast-food giant officially announced that its legendary fried apple pie will return to participating U.S. restaurants for a limited time starting June 23, 2026. The promotional run is timed to coincide with celebrations surrounding America's milestone 250th birthday.

The classic all-day menu dessert features a warm apple filling made with 100% American-grown apples, wrapped inside the signature bubbly, deep-fried, and flaky crust that defined the childhoods of millions of Americans.

A Recipe Perfected in Tennessee

The legendary hand pie first made its debut on the McDonald's menu in 1968. The concept was developed by Knoxville, Tennessee, franchise owner Litton Cochran, whose wife, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the southern-style recipe.

The fried treat remained a core dessert staple for decades. However, in 1992, most U.S. locations quietly phased out the fried version in favor of a baked alternative. The corporate shift occurred in response to growing consumer awareness regarding dietary fat and cholesterol, arriving the same year the U.S. Department of Agriculture introduced its original food guide pyramid.

Despite the sweeping menu overhaul, the fried pie never completely vanished. It remained a legendary staple at McDonald's locations in Hawaii, and it continued to be sold in select international markets, including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Greece, and China.

"There are certain things that just take you back — and the Fried Apple Pie is one of them," Eric Cochran, a current McDonald's owner and operator and the grandson of Litton Cochran, said in a statement. "It’s something that people love and remember from growing up."

Customers React to the Golden Comeback

The announcement immediately set social media platforms ablaze with excitement, particularly among Gen X and Millennial diners who harbor fond memories of the original recipe.

"This is amazing news! But I wish it wasn’t just for two weeks!" one Reddit user wrote, highlighting the fleeting nature of the limited-time promotion.

Other fans expressed hope that strong sales during this trial run might convince corporate executives to make the change permanent. "I see this as the beginning of a re-introduction," another optimistic commenter posted.

Naturally, the return of a historic favorite also reignited long-standing culinary debates among fast-food purists. Some argued that modern health guidelines might prevent the chain from fully recreating the magic of the 1970s and 1980s.

A Giant Celebration on Route 66

To properly mark the return of the fan-favorite dessert, McDonald's is going big on physical promotions.

The company is installing a massive, 35-foot-tall fried apple pie display along historic Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, located just a short drive from the company's global headquarters in Chicago. The towering pastry sculpture will remain standing for public photos through July 4.

Local franchise operators are also hosting a kickoff festival in the Chicago area to debut the massive art installation. The community event will feature live music, ice-cold Coca-Cola, and free Arch Cards for early attendees eager to head to their local drive-thru and secure a taste of fast-food history.
