Matt Damon disclosed the reason behind terming his onscreen kiss with Scarlett Johansson as "hell" during the shooting of their 2011 family comedy, "We Bought A Zoo."
In a recent video for LADBible, the actor who recently turned 52, was in a conversation with Emily Blunt, his co-star from "Oppenheimer." The pair delved into the topic of proper manners for filming kissing scenes with fellow actors. Both emphatically concurred on the essentiality of brushing teeth, using mouthwash, and chewing gum, though Damon admitted that he could overlook minor bad breath.
As the dialogue progressed, the star of "Good Will Hunting" reminisced about an unpleasant onscreen kiss he once had with the 38-year-old Johansson.
"Can you imagine how awful that was?" Blunt fired back. "It's such a shame she has such terrible lips and everything. It must have been so awful."
"It was hell!" Damon said while laughing.
He continued, "What happened was, we did a shot before lunch, and it was this nice little two-shot that ended in the kiss. And it was really good."
"We went to lunch, and she and I both thought it was over, and she ate like an onion sandwich for lunch," Damon recalled.
Later, both of them returned to the filming location, only to find out that they had to continue shooting the kissing scene.
"She came in, and [director] Cameron Crowe had set the camera up, and it was like a tight shot of the kiss," Damon recalled. "And she goes ‘Aw s---! She goes, ’I literally just had, I had like an onion sandwich. I thought we did this.''"
The star of "The Devil Wears Prada" humorously inquired if Damon was "still sort of slightly aroused" by kissing Johansson despite her unpleasant breath.
"No, I was making fun of her that entire time about her onion breath, which I didn't even smell," Damon said.
"Her breath smells like roses," Damon insisted as the two started cracking up.
Damon, along with his wife Luciana Barroso, who he married in 2005, are proud parents to their daughters Isabella, 16, Gia, 14, and Stella, 12. Additionally, Damon is a stepfather to Barroso's 24-year-old daughter, Alexia, from a previous relationship.
On the other hand, Scarlett is a mother to eight-year-old daughter Rose Dorothy from her previous marriage to Romain Dauriac, and one-year-old son Cosmo with her current husband, Colin Jost, who is 40. Johansson was married to Dauriac from 2014 to 2017. The star of "Asteroid City" and "Saturday Night Live" comedian Jost tied the knot in 2020.
