Lt. Jessica Taylor, a now-retired officer from the Seattle Police Department, vented 23 years of frustration with both police and city authorities in a resignation letter she described as "unfiltered, raw, and unapologetic."
Instead of completing the typical exit interview form upon retiring on Aug. 1, Taylor composed a blistering letter. In it, she targeted Police Chief Adrian Diaz, Mayor Bruce Harrell, and the Seattle City Council, condemning them for permitting the city to fall into "anarchy & chaos."
After going public with her 15-page denunciation on "The Jason Rantz Show" on KTTH on Tuesday, Taylor indicted the police department as "a breeding ground of lies, deceit, favoritism, and rampant corruption."
"Chief Diaz, let me tell you, the state of the Seattle Police Department and this city is a disgrace," she wrote. "The toxic mix of the Seattle City Council's absurdity, the spinelessness of the Mayor, the leniency of the prosecutor's office, and your failed leadership has accelerated this city's downhill slide straight to rock bottom. The problems were already brewing before you came on the scene, but since your arrival, it’s been a free fall into anarchy & chaos."
She leveled accusations against policymakers, stating that they prioritized politics over the welfare of Seattle's citizens, leading to a situation where "criminals are running this city."
Lt. Taylor went on to criticize the Seattle City Council, stating, "The Seattle City Council has lost touch with reality and is making decisions that defy common sense and basic logic. Their priority is playing politics and pandering to radical ideologies, rather than genuinely serving the city's and its residents' best interests. Their absurd policies have turned Seattle into a playground for anarchists and criminals, and they seem utterly unconcerned with the devastating consequences of their actions."
She also directed her ire at Mayor Bruce Harrell, a Democrat, writing that he has placed political correctness above safety and "disregards the rampant lawlessness on our streets." Her rebuke extended to Police Chief Adrian Diaz, accusing him of playing "political games" and twisting the truth.
In a grave conclusion, Taylor wrote, "Know that this city's officers and citizens are suffering under your failed leadership and the incompetence of those in power. The people of this city deserve leaders who will stand up for what's right, enforce law and order, prosecute those who break it, and prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents above all else. It's time for a reckoning, and the citizens of Seattle deserve competent leadership."
Seattle's struggles with riotous protests—including events like the deadly Capital Hill Occupied Protest—homelessness, and a rise in crime that hit a 14-year-high in 2022 have been widely reported. The police department is grappling with understaffing, leading to delayed response times for 911 calls, potentially putting people in immediate danger, according to KOMO News.
In a conversation with KTTH host Jason Rantz, Lt. Taylor shared personal insight into how her job had affected her. She suffers from Trigeminal Neuralgia, a chronic medical condition that triggers intense facial pain. The city's implementation of a COVID-19 vaccine mandate worried her, as she feared the unknown side effects of the vaccine might exacerbate her condition. She sought an exemption, but her letter explained that, instead of granting her request, she was placed on unpaid leave.
