For over a decade, John Goodman portrayed the husband of Roseanne Barr's character on television, a role that ended following Barr's controversial tweets in 2018.
Goodman has since voiced deep feelings about Barr's dismissal from the show they both starred in, although he remains uncertain if these sentiments would lead him to collaborate with her in the future.
Goodman and Barr revived their roles as Dan and Roseanne Conner for a reboot of the original "Roseanne" series, which ran from 1988 to 1998. The show's reboot, airing from March to May 2018, ended abruptly when Barr faced backlash for her racist remarks aimed at Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to President Obama. Despite Barr contesting the allegations and issuing an apology for her "bad joke," she was dismissed from the show.
The reboot's success led the network to continue the series under a new title, "The Conners," with Barr's absence attributed to her character's off-screen demise. This proved a challenging period for Goodman.
John Goodman feels 'terrible' for Roseanne Barr after controversy: ‘She’s just her own person’ https://t.co/JRJQnDWrWp

Goodman said during an interview with The Sunday Times, "I was surprised at the response. And that’s probably all I should say about that … I know for a fact that she’s not a racist."
He further commented that she was enduring a considerable amount of distress due to the controversy.
While speaking with Variety at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival the previous week, Goodman was questioned about whether he had any remorse concerning those remarks.
"No," he answered. "At the time I remember going to some kind of junket where they saw the pilot, and then the interviews, and it just turned into an attack. And that made me very uncomfortable with them just attacking Roseanne."
Goodman continued, "I felt bad for her. I just feel terrible about the whole thing. We had a great time. And I love her. She’s just her own person."
Despite his enduring affection for her, it appears that he harbors reservations about the idea of reestablishing their professional relationship.
"I don’t know," he replied when asked if he's willing to work with her now. "If she’d like to… I just don’t know. I miss her. I wish her well."
He also had some positive feedback when asked about her contributions to the show now known as "The Conners."
"A lot of people have tied into the struggle of living paycheck to paycheck," he said, referencing the Conner family's blue collar problems that have been a staple of the show since its inception. "And we try to handle it with humor."
"Roseanne said something very early in the process: ‘Just because we’re poor doesn’t make us stupid.’ And I think that has a lot to say for the series, but it’s a struggle that’s handled with humor."
