Former Yankees Star Crushes 12-Field GOP Texas Primary With 61% of Votes

Former Major League Baseball star Mark Teixeira has secured a dominant victory in the Republican primary for Texas’s 21st Congressional District, avoiding a runoff in a crowded 12-candidate field. Teixeira claimed more than 61% of the vote Tuesday night, positioning himself to succeed Rep. Chip Roy in the heavily Republican district. Roy, a staple of the House Freedom Caucus, is vacating the seat to run for Texas Attorney General, leaving a high-profile opening in the heart of the Lone Star State.

Teixeira launched his campaign last August with a platform focused on securing the border and ending what he described as "radical woke indoctrination." His candidacy received a significant boost from an early endorsement by President Donald Trump, who praised the World Series champion's commitment to the America First agenda. The Club for Growth PAC also threw its weight behind Teixeira, contributing over $250,000 to help the former first baseman clear the primary hurdle.

On the campaign trail, Teixeira outlined a vision to lower taxes, cut red tape, and expand school freedom for Texas families. "Voters believed in his vision, and rewarded him with the Republican nomination," Club for Growth PAC President David McIntosh said following the results. Teixeira, who played 14 seasons in the majors and earned five Gold Gloves, moved his family back to Texas in 2021 and has since become a vocal advocate for conservative fiscal policies.

The 21st District covers a deep-red area stretching west of Austin and San Antonio, making Teixeira the heavy favorite heading into the general election. He defeated several opponents, including Daniel Betts, a former candidate for Travis County district attorney. On the Democratic side, Dr. Kristin Hook is leading her primary field with roughly 61% of the vote, setting the stage for a November matchup.

Teixeira described his primary win as a "huge victory" for the district and the state. "We’re going to run a strong race and win big in November, then hit the ground running to fight for Texas families," Teixeira said. He emphasized that his experience in high-pressure sports environments has prepared him for the legislative battles ahead in Washington.

As the GOP looks to strengthen its majority in the 2026 midterms, Teixeira’s victory is seen as a key hold for the party. With the support of the Trump administration and national conservative groups, the former Yankee is expected to be a prominent voice for Texas interests. "God bless Texas, and God bless America," Teixeira concluded as he pivoted his focus toward the general election.
