A Florida woman is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking a 72-year-old man wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. The incident took place earlier this week at a local park.
Laura Garrett, 33, was arrested by Largo police on Tuesday. She’s charged with battery on a person over 65, battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest without violence.
According to an arrest affidavit, Garrett approached the man at Northeast Park and Paw Place to question him about his support for President Donald Trump. The exchange quickly escalated.
Garrett allegedly poured a can she was holding on the man's head and hit him on the back of the head and shoulder with it. She denied hitting him with the can, but witnesses and the victim said otherwise.
After the alleged attack, police say Garrett jumped a fence and tried to walk away. Officers later found her, but the situation didn’t end quietly.
As officers tried to arrest her, Garrett reportedly dropped to the ground and resisted. When one officer tried to escort her, she wrapped her legs around him and caused him to fall, bruising his knee.
Police say she continued to kick and struggle as they tried to take her into custody. The physical altercation added a second battery charge to her case.
Garrett was booked into the Pinellas County Jail Tuesday night and released the following evening, according to jail records.
