Couples Rush to Get Marriage Licenses Ahead of Unique Date

Holidays are a fun time, and this year, something cool is happening. On New Year's Eve, the date will be 1-2-3-1-2-3, which is a really unique number pattern. Lots of couples think this is a special time to get married.

So, at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, they set up a special place where people can quickly get a marriage license. This is the first time they've done this during the December holidays.

On the first day this special office opened, some couples were really excited to get their marriage papers there. Hayley, who got her marriage certificate, said it was super easy to just walk in and get it done.

"I was like, this is so much easier to just come right here, so we just walked on in," she said.

Hayley and her soon-to-be husband are one of many couples who visited the special marriage license office at the Las Vegas airport on Tuesday morning.

They're getting married the next day at a place called the Little White Chapel. Hayley found out about this easy way to get a marriage license because of a sign she saw in the airport right after her flight landed.

This week, couples coming to Las Vegas for their wedding don't have to go all the way to the city center to get their marriage papers. They can just get them at the airport as soon as they arrive.

Ellery Mendz, who also got a marriage certificate, said it was super easy. They took a shuttle bus from the international part of the airport, so they didn't have to travel to the downtown area. It made things much simpler for them.

The Clark County Marriage License Bureau, which is in charge of giving out marriage licenses, says that 80% of the couples who get married in Las Vegas are not from Nevada. They come from other states to have their wedding in Vegas.

"Of that 80%, almost 20% are international, so [a] large number of those people come through the airport. We see people coming in their wedding dresses, and we see people coming with their suitcase, so this gives them an opportunity of one less stop before they make it to their marriage ceremony," said Clark County Clerk Lynn Marie Goya.

Couples who go to this special pop-up place at the airport will get their marriage licenses or papers to renew their wedding vows. They'll also get a special gift that's themed for New Year's Eve.

As the week goes on, especially on New Year's Eve, this pop-up is expected to get really busy with lots of couples coming in.
