California-Based Restaurant Named Best Fast Food Chain in the Country - Not the One You Expected

Southern California burger loyalists may not like this result. In-N-Out has once again been left behind in a national fast food poll, and this time it did not even crack the top 10. Another California brand, Del Taco, took the No. 1 spot instead.

USA Today’s 10Best readers voted Del Taco the best fast food restaurant in the country in the publication’s latest poll. The chain is known for affordable tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos and a popular breakfast menu. USA Today said tens of millions of Americans rely on fast food every day, and the poll aimed to recognize chains that deliver speed, quality and scale.

A&W, Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s and Raising Cane’s rounded out the top five. Taco Bell came in at No. 6, while McDonald’s landed at No. 7. The results put several familiar names ahead of In-N-Out in a list that will no doubt stir debate among fast food fans.

In-N-Out has previously lost to Habit Burger & Grill in other national reader polls. This latest result adds another hit to the chain’s reputation as a regional favorite that still struggles to dominate on the national stage. For California diners, the poll may feel like a reminder that popularity at home does not always translate into nationwide bragging rights.

Del Taco was founded in 1964 by Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson in Yermo. The chain expanded steadily over the decades and now operates nearly 600 locations across 18 states. After being acquired by Jack in the Box in 2022, Del Taco was sold in 2025 to Fremont-based Yadav Enterprises for $115 million.
