It's been announced that the Boy Scouts of America will be unable to carry out their longstanding tradition of placing American flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day.
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, as well as other groups, have taken part in the tradition of placing small American flags at the graves of veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. It's a great way to show appreciation to the war heroes of this country.
Not this year. The Department of Veteran's Affairs prohibited public events at the sites due to COVID-19. The groups are not allowed to carry out the mass flag placements.
In Long Island, New York there are more than 500,000 veterans buried at two national cemeteries. People are demanding the VA to consider removing the ban.
"If we can't figure out a way to make sure we are placing flags at their graves to honor them, then something is seriously wrong," Suffolk County executive Steve Bellone said.
Bellone is certain a plan can be put in place that keeps the Boy Scouts safe.
"What we're asking the VA to do is, rather than have a blanket policy across the country, allow the national cemeteries at the local level, to make this determination in conjunction with the local health department,” he said to Fox News. “We will take the responsibility to say that this flag placement plan meets the state and national guidelines but give us that opportunity to do it, allow us to honor our fallen heroes.”
