Outrage is mounting after California announced the early release of Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano. He’s the undocumented immigrant convicted of killing two teens in a 2021 drunk-driving crash. Originally sentenced to 10 years, he’s getting out over six years early. Families of the victims are furious.
Trump’s former border czar Tom Homan is stepping in. “If they don’t honor the detainer, we’ll have ICE agents outside that facility,” Homan warned on Fox News. “We will deport him.” He’s working with Homeland Security Secretary Noem on the case.
Ortega-Anguiano slammed into a car carrying 19-year-olds Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin. The wreck was fiery and fatal. He was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
ICE says his criminal history is long. Burglary in 2005. Vehicle theft in 2007. Battery with kidnapping in 2014. Plus, he’s been deported multiple times. Homan called him a repeat felon.
“Re-entry to the country, deported. Deportation is a felony,” Homan said. “We will prosecute him, and we will deport him.” An ICE detainer is in place, but California’s sanctuary laws could block it.
Families of the victims are fighting the release. They’ve written to the state demanding Ortega-Anguiano stay in prison. They fear he’ll come back even if deported.
“Everybody asks why I get so emotional,” Homan said. “I’ve met hundreds of angel moms and dads. I’ll never forget any of those stories. It’s just a tragedy.”
Homan remains active in Trump’s immigration agenda. Legal battles are stacking up. The Supreme Court is set to hear a major case in May on birthright citizenship.
He’s also blasting recent court rulings. One judge blocked Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport gang members. But Homan says they won’t back down.
“There’s a reason they’re district court judges. They’re not national judges,” he said. “This is what we got to fix in the Supreme Court. We’ve got to keep the president’s promise.”
