On Tuesday, for the first time, President Biden spoke about the classified documents that were found in his private office at the Penn Biden Center, stating that he was taken aback by the discovery and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation by the Justice Department.
"Let me get rid of the easy one first," Biden said while taking reporter questions at the North American Leaders Summit in Mexico City. "People know I take classified documents and classified information seriously." Biden said his personal attorneys found the classified documents when they were cleaning out his office.
"They did what they should have done. They immediately called the archives… turned them over to the archives, and I was briefed about this discovery and surprised to learn that there were any government records that were taken there to that office," the president continued. "But I don't know what's in the documents. My lawyers have not suggested I ask what documents they were."

According to Richard Sauber, special counsel to the White House, the classified documents from Biden's tenure as vice president were found on November 2, 2020, at the Penn Biden Center. President Biden used the think tank as his personal office from mid-2017 up until the beginning of his 2020 presidential campaign.
"The documents were not the subject of any previous request or inquiry by the Archives," Sauber said Monday.
"Since that discovery, the President's personal attorneys have cooperated with the Archives and the Department of Justice in the process to ensure that any Obama-Biden Administration records are appropriately in the possession of the Archives."
The review of the matter has been assigned to John Lausch, a U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and a Trump appointee, by the Attorney General Merrick Garland.
On Tuesday, President Biden expressed his desire that the investigation will be concluded promptly.
