Walmart is testing a modest return to late-night shopping at a limited number of stores. Select locations are now staying open until 1 a.m., giving customers two additional hours to shop beyond the schedule most Walmart stores have followed since 2020.
The retailer had long been known for 24-hour locations before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, Walmart sharply reduced operating hours across its network, generally moving to a 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. schedule. The change gave workers more time to clean, restock and prepare stores overnight.
The current test is limited to a handful of locations, including a Walmart in Clermont, Florida. Store employees have said the company is studying customer demand, late-night sales and whether the extended hours make sense from an operational standpoint.

For now, the pilot only applies to the main sales floor. Customers can shop groceries, household items, electronics, clothing and other everyday essentials later into the night. The pharmacy, deli, bakery and service desks will continue operating on their own schedules, which often end earlier.
The test could bring welcome relief for night-shift workers, parents with unpredictable schedules, travelers and shoppers who need essentials after traditional business hours. Many communities lost one of their few reliable late-night retail options when Walmart ended its 24-hour format. Staying open until 1 a.m. would restore part of that flexibility without bringing back continuous operations.
Walmart is likely tracking traffic, sales, staffing needs, utility costs and security concerns during the new hours. The company will also have to weigh any additional revenue against the expense of keeping a large store open later. A broader expansion has not been announced.
The retailer often uses local pilots before making major nationwide changes. Clermont’s location in Central Florida, near residential areas, tourist activity and larger metro markets, could provide useful data about how much demand remains for late-night shopping. The results will determine whether more Walmart stores gain those extra evening hours.
