Second Lady Usha Vance turned a high-minded fashion critique into a viral social media moment on Wednesday, poking fun at a major news outlet for drawing "political significance" from a budget maternity dress she bought on sale.
The exchange began after The New York Times published a fashion analysis exploring the visibility of pregnancy among prominent women in President Donald Trump's political circle. The piece, written by fashion critic Vanessa Friedman, focused on Vance, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Katie Miller—the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller—all of whom have either recently given birth or are expecting.
Friedman argued that the trio's public embrace of their pregnancies was a calculated aesthetic that aligned with the administration's emphasis on family and fertility, describing the look as "baby-con." Referring to a Father's Day video posted by Vance, Friedman noted that the second lady appeared in a fitted coral maternity dress that highlighted her baby bump.
"That three such prominent women in the MAGA movement were pregnant at pretty much the same time was, indubitably, a coincidence," Friedman wrote. "But for an administration that has such an intuitive and strategic understanding of the power of aesthetics... it has also become a telling one. Together, the women have created a notably consistent, and somewhat paradigm-shifting, picture of the White House’s family and fertility platform."

Usha Vance, who is currently pregnant with her fourth child, was unimpressed by the deep political reading of her wardrobe choices.
Taking to X on Wednesday, Vance delivered a sharp, tongue-in-cheek reality check to the publication.
"Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks!" Vance wrote.
She added: "In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and a good story with your kids on Storytime with the Second Lady."
To drive the point home, the second lady shared a screenshot of her digital Old Navy receipt. The receipt showed that the dress was originally priced at $49.99, marked down to $12.49, and had an additional $3.74 deducted through a promotional code, bringing the final cost to just $8.75.
The humorous response quickly went viral on social media, with everyday users praising the second lady's thrifty shopping habits and laughing at the disconnect between elite media commentary and everyday shopping realities.
"It's a Midwest trademark to respond to a fashion compliment by telling people you got it on sale," one popular comment noted, suggesting the New York-based critic might benefit from spending more time outside of major coastal cities.
"I love thrifty shopping, coupons, and great deals," another user posted. "Are we supposed to be against the second lady being like normal U.S. housewives? I think that's her best quality."
The dress in question was featured during a Father's Day episode of Vance's online series, "Storytime with the Second Lady," which featured a guest appearance by her husband, Vice President JD Vance.
Earlier this year, the couple announced they were expecting their fourth child, a boy, who is due in late July. They are already parents to sons Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, and daughter Mirabel, 4.
