On Wednesday U.S. Soccer's board of directors voted to end the band on kneeling during the national anthem as a reaction to the death of George Floyd.
It is stated in Policy 604-1: “All persons representing a Federation national team shall stand respectfully during the playing of national anthems at any event in which the Federation is represented.” This rule was passed on February 9, 2017.
“We have not done enough to listen — especially to our players — to understand and acknowledge the very real and meaningful experiences of Black and other minority communities in our country. We apologize to our players — especially our Black players -- staff, fans, and all who support eradicating racism,” U.S. Soccer said in a statement that was released Wednesday. “Sports are a powerful platform for good, and we have not used our platform as effectively as we should have. We can do more on these specific issues and we will.”
U.S. Soccer reversed a ban on kneeling during the national anthem, admitting "this policy was wrong."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell put out an apology video where he acknowledged wrong for not recognizing the protest against police brutality. There has been a lot of strife between owners and players with regards to the kneeling.
“We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” Goodell said.
Moving forward, kneeling during the national anthem could become commonplace. Having the mainstream media in their corner gives the kneelers a lot of power.
