Trump's Cost-Cutters Team Adds First Democrat to the Team

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., made waves on Tuesday by joining the House of Representatives' DOGE Caucus. He's the first Democrat to step into the now-bipartisan group.

Moskowitz pushed for a bold move: removing the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This idea has been floated by Republicans for months.

"Today I will join the Congressional DOGE Caucus, because I believe that streamlining government processes and reducing ineffective government spending should not be a partisan issue," Moskowitz declared.

The DOGE Caucus, short for Delivering Outstanding Government Efficiency, was started by Reps. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, and Aaron Bean, R-Fla. The group gained attention after President-elect Donald Trump tapped Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a DOGE advisory panel.

"I’ve been clear that there are ways we can reorganize our government to make it work better for the American people. Specifically, the Department of Homeland Security, while very necessary, has gotten too big," Moskowitz added.

He proposed making the USSS and FEMA independent federal agencies. "They should report directly to the White House," he suggested.

"It’s not practical to have 22 agencies under this one department. I look forward to working in a bipartisan manner with my colleagues to remove FEMA and Secret Service from DHS," Moskowitz said.

The Florida Democrat’s position is notable, given his history with these agencies. He served as Florida's director of Emergency Management under Gov. Ron DeSantis and has worked on similar initiatives before.

Moskowitz previously teamed up with Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., to push for FEMA’s separation from DHS. His deep familiarity with the agencies bolsters his credibility.

In Congress, Moskowitz also serves on the bipartisan task force investigating assassination attempts against Trump. It’s another example of his collaborative approach.

The DOGE Caucus marks one of several Republican-led efforts to align with Musk and Ramaswamy’s government efficiency mission. House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., recently announced plans for a new subcommittee on government efficiency, to be led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
