Trump Spokeswoman Leavitt Rejects Texas Democrat’s MAGA Promise

Talarico Makes an Unusual Offer to Trump

Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico used Election Day to make an offer few voters expected: He said he would like to work with President Donald Trump to deliver parts of the original MAGA promise. Talarico is running against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a closely watched Texas Senate contest. In an interview with Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO, Talarico said he would “love” to work with Trump on a practical governing agenda. Fox News reported that the interview was released Monday, one day before voting concluded. This was not the usual campaign-season plea for unity. Talarico named specific policy areas, including health care access, child care, and housing.

Housing Becomes the Proposed Bridge

Talarico appealed to Trump’s background as a builder and offered to help cut federal red tape so millions of new homes could be built. He argued that the MAGA promise was supposed to remake government for Americans who had been ignored or left behind, and he said there was still time for Trump to deliver on it. That framing marks a sharp change from the way Democrats usually discuss MAGA. Rather than treating the movement as something beyond respectable politics, Talarico is presenting its stated goals as an unfinished policy project. The federal bureaucracy, naturally, appears in this version as the obstacle standing between families and a larger supply of affordable homes.

A Political Course Correction

Talarico also suggested that a Democratic victory could serve as a wake-up call for the administration and push Trump to change direction during the remaining two years of his term. He went further by describing Democratic midterm victories as a possible “rebirth” for Trump’s presidency. The proposal is especially unusual after months of campaign conflict between Talarico and Trump. Trump has repeatedly attacked the Texas Democrat and even called him “Talafreako.” Talarico nevertheless said he would welcome cooperation on the economic promises that helped draw voters to MAGA. It is an ambitious attempt to turn political opposition into leverage, which is a tidy concept until actual politicians get involved.

Leavitt Rejects the Olive Branch

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that she did not believe Talarico’s pitch “for one second.” She argued that Talarico was presenting himself as a moderate while his record told voters something different. The skepticism also reflects the campaign math. Talarico appeared to be targeting Texans who consider themselves conservative but had broken with Paxton. His campaign highlighted one such voter who said, “I’m actually conservative, but I’m voting for Talarico.” In his own closing message, Talarico said, “We’ve always been up against a rigged system. But we’ve always had each other,” and urged voters to bet on the underdog.
