In an online post, Bessent explained that the coin will celebrate "the enduring legacy of liberty" and serve as a "lasting symbol of patriotism." The treasury secretary also shared an image of the new design, which features Trump's portrait on one side. The obverse side also displays the word "LIBERTY" and the years "1776 ~ 2026."

The reverse side of the coin features a presidential-style eagle shield with the number "250" at its center. Federal law generally prohibits living individuals from appearing on national currency. However, the Trump administration clarified that the design is authorized under a two thousand and twenty law permitting special coins for the semiquincentennial.
The announcement quickly generated intense reactions across the political spectrum. Proponents praised the coin as a fitting tribute to the country's milestone birthday. They argued that it represents a strong symbol of American resilience and determination.
Critics were quick to dismiss the coin as a vanity project. Representative Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, accused the administration of prioritizing the release during a difficult economic time. "The irony is incredible – while Americans are pinching pennies to afford the skyrocketing costs of groceries, housing, and healthcare, the Trump administration is producing coins featuring Trump’s face," Nadler stated on social media.
Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, also voiced his skepticism regarding the decision. Massie warned that the coin could lead to "worthless knockoffs" sold by opportunists.
