Tiger Woods made a rare public appearance in a prerecorded video message honoring longtime friend Notah Begay III, who received the 2026 Payne Stewart Award on Tuesday.
In the clip, Woods reflected on a friendship that began when he was 11 years old and praised Begay’s achievements both in professional golf and through his work in Native American communities.
“You’ve helped over 80,000 youths and their families, which is absolutely incredible,” Woods said, pointing to Begay’s efforts to support young people and raise opportunities in tribal communities.
"More people need to know what you've done and how you've served ... you're trying to raise the bar to allow people to go ahead and achieve a lot more in life."

The Payne Stewart Award recognizes a PGA Tour player’s character, sportsmanship, charitable efforts and commitment to giving back. Begay, a four-time PGA Tour winner and former Presidents Cup participant, was honored for his philanthropic work as well as his playing career.
The video attracted attention on social media, where some viewers commented on Woods’ appearance while others urged compassion and privacy. Woods has largely remained out of public view in recent months.
Fox News/OutKick reported that Woods is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 8 in connection with a pending DUI case stemming from a March crash. The outlet also reported that he sought treatment overseas afterward; those details concern ongoing matters and should be treated as reported allegations and proceedings rather than final findings.
