Russell Brand Convicted of Rape, Judge Signals Significant Prison Term

Russell Brand faces sentencing after London jury convictions

Guilty Verdict in London

A London jury found Russell Brand guilty Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. Mr Justice Joel Bennathan told Brand that a significant prison sentence is coming, with sentencing scheduled for Monday. Brand was denied bail and taken into custody after the verdict. The case involved seven charges tied to six women and allegations spanning more than 20 years. The conviction is a legal finding on four counts, while the sentence remains to be decided.

Split Verdict, Serious Consequences

The 12-person jury, made up of eight men and four women, deliberated for more than eight hours across two days at Southwark Crown Court. Jurors convicted Brand on four counts involving four women. They acquitted him of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. That split verdict matters because the jury considered each allegation separately rather than treating the case as one all-or-nothing decision. The Associated Press reported that the judge warned the guilty verdicts would bring a substantial custodial sentence.

Brand Denied the Charges

Brand, 51, denied the charges throughout the trial. He testified that he had been obsessed with sex and had lived a promiscuous life when younger, but said he never forced anyone into a sexual act. His lawyers challenged the prosecution's case by pointing to the time between the alleged incidents and the women's reports to police. They also argued that a 2023 television documentary and related reporting had influenced how the events were remembered. The jury rejected that defense on four of the seven counts.

How Prosecutors Expanded the Case

The Crown Prosecution Service said Brand was first charged with two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault over alleged offenses between 1999 and 2005 involving four women. Prosecutors later added a rape charge tied to an alleged incident between February 7 and March 1, 2009, and a sexual-assault charge tied to a separate alleged incident between August 31 and December 1, 2009. Those additions followed a Metropolitan Police investigation into non-recent allegations and involved two additional women who were not part of the original charging decision. Chief Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan said the evidence met the required evidentiary and public-interest tests. The December 2025 charging decision authorized prosecution but did not determine guilt.

Police Response and Next Step

Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy credited the women who came forward and said Brand had used his fame and influence to exploit women as his public profile grew. Brand rose to international fame through stand-up comedy, British television and radio, and films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In later years, he built a large online audience around anti-establishment commentary, wellness, spirituality and Christianity. Those public roles did not decide the criminal case. The jury's task was narrower: determine whether prosecutors proved the specific charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday, when the court is expected to address the prison term signaled after the verdict.
