Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan believe in a key rule for keeping their marriage strong. They never go more than two weeks without seeing each other. "We do have a two-week rule," Susan said, explaining how they manage their time.
The Downeys are both partners in life and work, running their company, Team Downey, for 18 years. They try not to plan too far ahead due to the unpredictable nature of their jobs. "You just never know," Susan commented on the uncertainties they face.
Susan admits she has more flexibility in her schedule than Robert. Being a producer rather than in front of the camera allows her this advantage. She empathizes with couples who don't have this flexibility.
The couple has three children together. Their family is central to their lives. Robert's appreciation for his family has been a cornerstone of his personal growth, especially after overcoming significant challenges in his life.
"Fortunately, we prefer to be a traveling circus when we can be," Susan said about their preference to stay together as much as possible. This mindset helps them navigate their busy, often unpredictable lives.
"You keep the basic rule of two weeks, and then you don't try and think too far ahead," Susan shared. This approach helps them maintain a balance despite the unpredictability of their careers.
"The good news is I'm not in front of the camera," Susan remarked on her role's flexibility compared to that of an actor. This difference makes it easier for her to balance work and family life.
Robert values his family deeply, crediting them with giving him a positive focus for his energies. "It just gives me, honestly, something to attach my neurosis to that's positive," he said, highlighting the importance of his wife and children in his life.
