According to new reports, Alec Baldwin did not shoot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a "prop gun" as originally believed, but rather shot a live round out of a a gun that was being used for "target practice" off-set of the movie "Rust."
The round hit Hutchins in the chest, killing her, and also wounded director Joel Souza.
“The smoking gun that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins might’ve been more than just an on-set prop — it was also being fired recreationally, even when cameras weren’t rolling,” TMZ reports. “Multiple sources directly connected to the ‘Rust’ production tell TMZ … the same gun Alec Baldwin accidentally fired — hitting the DP and director — was being used by crews members off set as well, for what we’re told amounted to target practice."
Daily Mail reports that film script supervisor Mamie Mitchell is the one who made the 911 call for help after assistant director David Halls gave Baldwin the weapon that killed Hutchins.
“We need an ambulance out at Bonanza Creek Ranch right now. We have had two people accidentally shot on a movie set accidentally,” Mitchell told the 911 operator.
“Bonanza Creek ranch. We have had two people accidentally shot on a movie set by a prop gun,” she added. “We need help immediately. Bonanza Creek ranch. Come on.”
“It sounds like somebody else is calling for ambulances,” the operator replied.
“Everybody should be. We need some help,” Mitchell declared. “Our director and our camerawoman has been shot.”
“So, was it loaded with a real bullet or what?” the 911 operator asks, and Mitchell replied, “I don’t, I cannot tell you that. We have two injuries from a movie gunshot."
According to the warrant, Halls told Baldwin that the gun was "cold," meaning it did not have a live bullet in it.
That is exactly why every person should be following gun safety 101: NEVER point a gun at something or someone that you do not want to destroy or kill. That includes toy and prop guns. If anti-gun nut Balwdin had followed that simple rule, then Hutchins would still be alive.
