Denny's is gearing up for a major makeover. The iconic diner chain plans upgrades at roughly 500 restaurants as it invests in artificial intelligence, new technology, and other moves aimed at bringing customers back.
CEO Christopher Bode, who took over the South Carolina-based company earlier this year, told FOX Business the upgrades will roll out over the next 12 to 18 months. That builds on more than 200 remodels already completed since the pandemic.

Project Grand Slam
The upgrades are part of "Project Grand Slam," Bode's two-year turnaround plan. It focuses on five areas: menu innovation, facility upgrades, catering, technology, and day-to-day operations.
Bode called modernizing the restaurants a top priority. Having 500 locations in the pipeline, he said, is a big deal for the company.
Putting AI to Work
Denny's is using AI to better understand its customers, schedule staff, forecast food needs, and streamline internal communication. Bode said speed is everything, and the company can't wait months for data it needs today.
AI is also helping set menu prices based on local conditions. Bode pointed out that a breakfast plate can't cost the same in Raleigh as it does in Los Angeles.
New Tech at the Table
Customers will also notice changes when they sit down. Denny's is rolling out new point-of-sale systems, table-side tablets, and an upgraded mobile app.
The chain is expanding its catering business through a national partnership with ezCater. More than 1,000 Denny's locations have already signed on, and Bode sees it as a major growth opportunity.

Diners Want More for Their Money
The investments come as families feel the squeeze of higher living costs and get pickier about where they eat. Bode said a good price used to be enough to bring people in, but now they expect a great experience to go with it.
That means quality food, attentive service, and modern dining rooms. As Bode put it, if he takes his family out, it better be worth it.
Honoring Hometown Heroes
Denny's is also marking the 50th anniversary of its famous Grand Slam breakfast with a new campaign called "Denny's Heroes." It honors first responders, teachers, military members, health care workers, and other local leaders.
Through Oct. 30, customers can nominate someone deserving. Thirty winners will receive a catered Denny's celebration for up to 50 guests.
Bode said the campaign is a way for the chain to give back and thank the people who serve their communities.
