President Donald Trump praised regional grocer Giant Eagle on Sunday for slashing prices on hundreds of products as the administration works to address ongoing inflation concerns. The president revealed on Truth Social that the company plans to discount more than 300 items through Labor Day to help working-class households. He commended the chain for answering his call to lower basic living costs for American families.
"Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families," Trump wrote in his post. The company initiated the price cuts on July 9, targeting everyday essentials like beef and American cheese. The promotional push follows a similar seasonal initiative implemented by the grocery chain last fall.
The announcement follows a similar move by retail giants Walmart and Sam's Club earlier this month. Those companies rolled out nationwide price cuts on thousands of items, including ground beef, produce, snacks, and soft drinks. Trump urged other major grocery chains to immediately follow the lead of these businesses, calling the retailers absolute patriots.
The coordinated price-cutting efforts arrive as the administration faces intense public pressure over the stubborn cost of food, gas, and oil. A recent survey conducted by the Harris Poll revealed that 95 percent of Americans believe the nation is facing an affordability crisis. Additionally, a separate poll from CNN showed that 77 percent of citizens currently blame the administration for high consumer costs.
Giant Eagle operates a massive retail network across northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana. The regional chain is also preparing for a major corporate transition in the coming months. Supermarket giant Kroger announced on July 1 that it plans to acquire Giant Eagle for 1.65 billion dollars, with the deal expected to close in 2027 pending regulatory approval.
