A Buc-ee’s pay sign is fueling a fresh debate online after it revealed that some store managers can earn as much as $275,000 a year without a college degree. The posted wage scale also shows cashiers, warehouse workers, maintenance employees and grocery stockers starting at $20 an hour. For many Americans, the numbers are a reminder that good pay can still come from jobs outside the traditional four-year track.
Food service managers can earn between $150,000 and $200,000 a year, while general managers can make between $200,000 and $275,000, according to the company’s posted pay information. The sign also lists benefits such as weekly pay, health care, a 401(k) with company match, paid time off and an extra hourly premium for overnight shifts. That kind of transparency is rare in retail, and it has made Buc-ee’s a talking point far beyond the travel-center business.
Eric Bowman, the Georgia-based editor-in-chief of TravelPulse, said Buc-ee’s has grown into something much bigger than a typical gas station. “Buc-ee's appeal is largely due to its large size,” Bowman told Fox News Digital. “People, especially those who love a good road trip, have long loved roadside attractions. That's what Buc-ee's has become.”

Bowman said the chain’s spotless restrooms, broad food offerings and memorable branding have helped create a loyal following. He added that the oversized stores, brisket sandwiches and wall of beef jerky turn a quick stop into an experience. “Add in a cute mascot and clever marketing... and the word spreads fast that it's a place you have to see at least once,” he said.
That reputation is part of why the pay scale hit so hard online. Some users on X argued it proves a strong income does not always require student debt, while others said the salaries reflect the pressure of managing one of the chain’s biggest stores. One commenter said there are “well-paying jobs available if you look for them,” while another called the numbers “a compelling case” for younger people to rethink taking on major debt for a degree.
Not everyone saw it as a simple win for workers. Some commenters said the money comes with nonstop responsibility, strict standards and long hours in a high-traffic environment. Others compared the Buc-ee’s salaries with their own careers and said the numbers were surprising. One longtime air traffic controller and Air Force veteran said he was stunned that some Buc-ee’s managers could earn more than he does after decades in one of the country’s most stressful jobs.
