Police Search for Ryan Hanafin After Andria Hanafin Is Found Shot Dead in Reading

Police search for Ryan Hanafin after Andria Hanafin was found shot dead in Reading, Massachusetts

Police Find a Fatal Shooting in Reading

Authorities in Reading, Massachusetts, are investigating an apparent homicide after 49-year-old Andria Hanafin was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside the kitchen of her Center Avenue home. Her husband, Matthew Hanafin, called 911 at about 12:38 a.m. Thursday after returning to the house. Responding officers pronounced Andria dead at the scene. Reading Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the district attorney are working on the case.

Ryan Hanafin Is a Person of Interest

Police have named 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin, Andria’s older son, as a person of interest and warned that he may be armed and dangerous. The distinction matters. Hanafin has not been publicly charged, and the official account does not accuse him of firing the fatal shot. Investigators say they need to locate him, speak with him, and find the firearm they believe may still be with him. Ryan and his vehicle were both unaccounted for as officers continued the search.

Police Release a Description and Vehicle Alert

Police describe Hanafin as approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with shoulder-length blond hair, glasses, and a mustache. A recent police photograph was released. Investigators believe he may be driving a black 2010 Dodge Charger with Massachusetts license plate 2PSY15. The vehicle was last observed traveling on Interstate 93 in the Tewksbury area Wednesday evening. Reading Police Chief David Clark said anyone who sees Hanafin or the Charger should stay away and call 911 immediately rather than approaching.

Family Members Have Given Investigators Details

The family’s 13-year-old son had been out with friends Wednesday evening. He told investigators that he returned around 9 p.m., went directly to his bedroom, and did not see his mother. Matthew Hanafin reportedly told police he had not spoken with Ryan since Wednesday morning. Ryan’s sister was away at college when the shooting occurred. Reporting on the case also said there had been no significant history of calls to the home, while investigators worked to determine whether any danger was limited to the household or could extend beyond it.

Officials Still Have Not Located the Firearm

Hanafin had a Massachusetts license to carry, and firearms were registered in his name. Reading Police suspended that license Thursday morning. Officials have not announced the recovery of the weapon involved in Andria Hanafin’s death, and they have not said where Ryan may be. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators do not yet know whether the danger is isolated to the family. The public warning remains direct: do not approach Hanafin or the Charger, and call 911 if either is spotted.
