An Amazon driver in New York City faced charges after an encounter with a drunk migrant. The incident happened in Brooklyn, near a shelter where the migrant lived.
Abu, the Amazon worker, was delivering packages when he saw the man acting inappropriately. The migrant, identified as Yeison Sanchez, attempted to steal from Abu's van.
Abu confronted Sanchez, leading to a physical altercation. He used a piece of ice for self-defense, striking Sanchez.
"I picked up a piece and I socked him with it and he went down on his butt," said Abu.
Despite calling for police assistance, Abu was charged with third-degree assault. Sanchez reported being punched, but Abu insisted on his self-defense.
"[Sanchez] was telling [the police] in Spanish that I punched him in the face," Abu said to the Post. "I told them there’s cameras around, you can probably find something. They said there were no cameras. After a while it turned into a ‘He said, she said’ thing and that’s how it went."
Sanchez faced charges for petit larceny, public lewdness, and alcohol consumption on the streets. He was released without bail.
Abu expressed frustration over the situation, emphasizing self-defense. He feared job loss and referenced a coworker's previous assault.
"He was trying to aggressively hurt me and I just protected myself and my property from my job," Abu said. "That’s it. I ended up being taken in, and now I have an open case about this … It’s ridiculous."
Abu's case highlights challenges workers face, including the need to protect themselves and their property.
