Rapper Macklemore is facing serious consequences after using a major concert stage to lecture fans on Middle Eastern politics. The artist was removed from Ed Sheeran’s upcoming United States stadium tour following multiple venue rejections.
The fallout intensified when New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft barred the rapper from performing at Gillette Stadium. Sheeran is scheduled to play at the Foxborough venue on September 25 and September 26.
Macklemore originally opened for Sheeran during shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During those performances, he wore a keffiyeh, displayed footage of destruction in Gaza, and led the crowd in anti-Israel chants.
The controversial song included lyrics accusing Israel of genocide. Macklemore later claimed the tour gave him a massive platform to broadcast his political message.

He also stated that Sheeran informed him about Kraft rallying other stadium owners against him. Kraft cited the rapper's stage behavior and a broader history of controversial rhetoric.
Kraft released an official statement explaining the decision to ban the performer from Gillette Stadium. He emphasized the venue's commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment free from hate speech.
"Gillette Stadium has a longstanding commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all guests and ensuring that events held at our venue do not provide a platform for hate speech," Kraft stated. The prominent owner noted that the stage materials crossed a clear line.
"Based on Macklemore's recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran's shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of anti-Semitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th shows would not be permitted," Kraft added. Tour promoters confirmed that multiple venue operators refused to allow him on the lineup.

Eight of the remaining ten tour stops were scheduled inside major NFL stadiums. Messina Touring Group ultimately confirmed Macklemore’s removal from all remaining American dates.
Macklemore has a documented history of controversial public appearances. In May 2014, he performed in Seattle wearing a costume that civil rights groups condemned as featuring anti-Jewish caricatures.
The Anti-Defamation League and other organizations criticized the outfit at the time. Macklemore defended the costume by claiming it was entirely accidental.
That past controversy resurfaced with the recent release of his politically charged track. Critics pointed out that his stage performances routinely target Israel while ignoring Hamas terror attacks.
Kraft addressed this selective presentation of the complex geopolitical conflict in his statement. He founded the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism in 2019.
"This decision is not about diminishing the suffering of innocent Palestinians or denying anyone the right to advocate on their behalf," Kraft stated. He stressed that advocacy should never target the Jewish community or ignore terrorism.
"But that advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or obscure the responsibility of Hamas, a designated terrorist organization whose horrific actions have caused immeasurable suffering," Kraft added. He noted that supporting civilians and opposing terrorism are entirely compatible goals.
"I would welcome the opportunity to sit down with Macklemore and discuss the facts, because ultimately our goal is the same: peace for all people, an end to suffering, and an end to all hate," Kraft concluded. The team owner expressed hope for constructive dialogue moving forward.
Macklemore responded through a social media post addressing his removal from the tour. He blamed venue operators and Kraft while acknowledging that Sheeran was put in a difficult position.
The rapper refused to accept characterizations of his stage remarks as hate speech. He insisted that losing his spot on the stadium tour was a price he was willing to pay.
