MMA Fighter to DHS: Trump Taps Former MMA Fighter as New Border Chief

President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through Washington on Thursday by announcing that Secretary Kristi Noem will be moving on from the Department of Homeland Security. Trump revealed on Truth Social that Senator Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican and former undefeated MMA fighter, is his pick to lead the agency effective March 31. Noem, who has overseen a historic national security surge at the border, will transition to a new role as Special Envoy for "The Shield of the Americas," a security initiative focused on the Western Hemisphere.

"The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy," Trump wrote. Noem’s 13-month tenure was marked by a decisive reversal of the open-border policies seen under the previous administration. Her agency notched record drug interdictions and oversaw the self-deportation of more than 2 million illegal aliens, an operation her supporters have hailed as the most successful in American history.

Despite her "spectacular results," reports surfaced that the president was furious over Noem’s performance during recent Judiciary Committee hearings. She faced intense grilling from Senator John Kennedy and others over a taxpayer-funded advertisement subcontracted to a firm connected to her inner circle. Tensions spiked when Noem suggested the president had personally approved the ad—a claim the White House later confirmed was false.

The hearings took an even more personal turn when radical-left Democrats, including Representatives Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Jared Moskowitz, pressed Noem on tabloid rumors regarding her personal life. Noem fired back at the "vile" attacks, accusing the liberal left of consistently demeaning conservative women. "The socialist, liberal left: you go off and you attack conservative women and you say that we’re either stupid or we’re sluts. That’s what you do. And I will tell you sir... I am neither of those," Noem fumed at Moskowitz.

The focus now shifts to Markwayne Mullin, who would become the first Native American DHS Secretary if confirmed. Mullin, a fierce Trump ally, appeared caught off guard by the announcement but expressed excitement about getting to work for the American people. "Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals," Trump stated, emphasizing Mullin's "tough-as-nails" reputation as a former fighter.

As the 2026 midterms approach, the transition marks a new chapter in the administration’s "Peace Through Strength" agenda at home. Noem’s departure comes amidst friction over mass deportation operations in Minneapolis and a "clown show" of partisan attacks in Congress. However, her move to "The Shield of the Americas" suggests the president still values her expertise in dismantling the cartels that pour drugs into our nation.
