Vice President Kamala Harris called Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, after former President Trump chose him as his running mate. She congratulated him after the announcement.
"Vice President Harris reached out to Senator Vance. She left a message to congratulate him and welcome him to the race," a Biden campaign official told Fox News. "She also expressed hope for a vice presidential debate proposed by CBS News."
Trump revealed Vance as his running mate in a Truth Social post. This came on the opening afternoon of the Republican National Convention.
In May, Trump accepted a vice presidential debate on Fox News. However, the Biden campaign wants the debate on CBS.
No vice presidential debate is confirmed yet. If Vance and Harris face off, it might be the vice president's worst-case scenario. President Biden and former President Trump agreed to two presidential debates. The first was hosted by CNN on June 27, and the second will be on ABC on Sept. 10.
"I think JD Vance would pose the greatest threat to Kamala Harris in some respects," said Ashley Etienne, Harris' former communications director. "He’s an incredible debater."
"He has a quality that makes him seem appealing to the undecided one to two percent who might actually vote," she explained. "Most people don't pay attention to the debates."
Etienne described the 39-year-old senator as "super smart" and "quick-witted." She noted these traits could be a problem for Harris.
Harris has become known for "word salads" or rambling monologues. One viral clip on TikTok features Harris asking, "You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?"
After laughing, she continues, "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."
Harris was even mocked in a Saturday Night Live skit. "It’s a process I call speaking without thinking," joked Desi Lydic, playing a "holistic thought adviser."
"It’s not about the destination of the thought, it’s about the journey," she added.
Elaina Plott Calabro, who profiled Harris for months, remarked, "She’s a very poor communicator when the parameters are quite wide."
In a debate, where communication is crucial, many question whether or not Harris could hold up.
