John Fetterman's "Lifelong Republican" Slip Brings Down the House

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., drew a roar of laughter Saturday when he accidentally described himself as a "lifelong Republican." The slip came during an appearance at the Texas Tribune Festival.

An audience member had asked why Fetterman doesn't just run as an independent. He caught his mistake right away and joked that the moment was sure to get clipped and shared.

No Plans to Switch Parties

Fetterman quickly made clear he isn't leaving the Democratic Party. He said he doesn't have a reason to, and admitted he sees "no path as a Republican."

Still, he took a sharp swipe at his own side. Fetterman argued that in today's Democratic "big tent," there's more room for people who say America deserved 9/11 than for someone proudly standing with Israel.

He also acknowledged that plenty of Democrats are fed up with his willingness to work across the aisle. If the party wants to vote him out or expel him, he said, that's their right.

Republicans Roll Out the Welcome Mat

The GOP has openly invited Fetterman to join its ranks. Speculation grew earlier this month when he recorded a video introducing fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick, a Republican, at the Republican National Committee's midterm convention.

Earlier in Saturday's event, Fetterman gave a keynote address criticizing both parties.

From Progressive to Party Thorn

Fetterman won his seat in 2022 by narrowly defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz on a progressive platform. That win helped Democrats lock in a razor-thin Senate majority.

Since then, he has repeatedly challenged the direction of his party. His unwavering support for Israel has made him a standout, and he has warned he would leave if Democrats dig deeper into anti-Israel positions.

Fetterman has also criticized the rise of far-left candidates this midterm cycle, including Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. As some in his party push to cut him loose, his message to Democrats remains the same: the party left him, not the other way around.
