Ilhan Omar Says “Not to My Knowledge” When Asked If She Married Her Brother

Ilhan Omar

The Answer That Set Off Another Round

The video begins with a reporter asking Rep. Ilhan Omar whether she married her brother. Omar keeps walking and answers, “Not to my knowledge.” That unusual wording is the clip’s entire spark. It could be sarcasm, dismissal, or an attempt to end the exchange, and the available account does not establish which. Internet commentators have already supplied plenty of certainty, naturally, but a short video cannot settle a years-old allegation. It does show Omar giving an answer that was less direct than the simple “no” many viewers expected.

The Allegation Remains Unproven

The allegation concerns Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom Omar legally married in 2009. Omar has repeatedly denied that Elmi is her brother. Public reporting has described the claim as unsubstantiated, and the available account stresses that it remains unproven in the public record. That distinction matters. A provocative answer may invite more questions, but it is not proof of a marriage arrangement, a family relationship, or a crime. The clip is a record of what Omar said, not a verdict on what happened.

The Federal Investigation Adds New Context

The video surfaced as federal scrutiny of Omar’s immigration history was receiving fresh attention. The Associated Press reported that authorities seized her phone during a search of her Washington-area home and issued more than a dozen grand-jury subpoenas, including some involving relatives. Axios reported that Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out a judicially authorized search warrant before dawn on October 12. Fox News summarized additional reported steps as the seizure of her passport and collection of a DNA sample. The full scope of the investigation remains unclear. A search warrant is an investigative tool, not a conviction, a distinction often misplaced when political drama meets social media.

Omar’s Lawyers Dispute the Search

Omar’s attorneys are seeking the return of seized property and preservation of audio and video from the search. They accuse the Justice Department of violating longstanding practices for investigative action near an election. A department spokesperson said law enforcement followed court orders and applicable legal obligations. Omar’s office called the search an abuse of power, and she said it was meant to intimidate her before the election. House Democratic leaders also criticized the operation. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has suggested investigators are examining possible crimes tied to family immigration paperwork. President Trump said authorities were examining Omar “very carefully,” while denying that he directed the search. The public account contains competing claims, not a completed case.

Why Old Records Keep Returning

Older records help explain why the question keeps returning. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that Omar separated from Elmi in her faith tradition in 2011 but did not obtain a legal divorce until 2017. She later legally married Ahmed Hirsi in 2018. The newspaper also reported that Omar filed joint federal tax returns with Hirsi in 2014 and 2015 while still legally married to Elmi, then corrected the tax discrepancy. Its review covered marriage and divorce filings, business records, university material, and available social-media evidence. Those records create a complicated timeline, but they do not by themselves establish the brother allegation.
