Heisman Winner Gets Trophy Back Nearly 15 Years Later

Reggie Bush, a former USC football standout, has successfully reclaimed his 2005 Heisman Trophy. The Heisman Trophy Trust is set to announce Bush's trophy "reinstatement" after nearly 15 years. He returned the trophy voluntarily in 2010 following NCAA penalties against USC.

Michael Comerford, president of the Heisman Trophy Trust, expressed enthusiasm about Bush's return. "We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments," he stated to ESPN.

The decision to restore Bush's trophy considers recent shifts in college athletics. "We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back," Comerford added.

Bush originally forfeited his Heisman Trophy in 2010 after a lengthy investigation. It was found that he and his family had accepted benefits from an unaffiliated would-be sports agent. His Heisman victory and his 2005 game participations at USC were vacated.

The evolving landscape of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals influenced Bush's efforts to regain his trophy starting in 2021. He also announced a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA in August over a derogatory statement made in July 2021.

The Heisman Trophy Trust highlighted "fundamental changes in college athletics" in their decision, noting that paying student athletes is now a standard practice. This reflects a significant transformation in the field.

Bush shared his excitement about the resolution. "Personally, I'm thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I'm honored to return to the Heisman family," he told ESPN.

He is also eager to contribute to the Heisman Trust's mission. "I look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization," Bush said.

Bush's reinstatement has garnered support from other Heisman Trophy winners. With the trophy now returned to him and USC receiving a replica, Bush is welcomed back into all future Heisman ceremonies.
