Vice President Kamala Harris surprised Oprah Winfrey on Thursday when she said anyone breaking into her home is "getting shot" during a virtual campaign rally.
Winfrey was hosting the "Unite for America Rally," a livestream event with celebrities and stories from citizens across the country.
When the topic of gun violence came up, Winfrey expressed surprise at Harris being a gun owner, which she mentioned during last week's presidential debate.
"I did not know that," Winfrey said. "And I thought that was powerful."
Harris then laughed and said, "If somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot, sorry."
"Yes, yes. I hear that," Winfrey responded.
Harris added, "Probably should not have said that," laughing again. "But my staff will deal with that later."
During the debate, Harris had clarified her stance on fracking and gun ownership, saying, "Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We're not taking anybody's guns away. So stop with the continuous lying about this stuff."
However, a resurfaced video from 2007 shows Harris, as San Francisco’s district attorney, supporting police entering gun owners' homes to inspect how they stored their weapons.
She said, "Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible."
Social media reacted strongly to Harris' recent comments, with some pointing out her previous support for gun control measures and mandatory buybacks.
Libs of TikTok tweeted, "Kamala says she would shoot an intruder, then says, ‘I probably shouldn’t have said that.’ But she’s repeatedly called to take away your guns."
Others echoed the sentiment, with Stephen Miller saying, "Maybe a journalist should follow up on her door-to-door gun buyback advocacy."
Larry Elder chimed in, "'Guns for me, not for thee…’"
Derek Hunter added, "They'll get shot by the Secret Service. It’s you she wants to disarm."
The "Unite for America Rally" was organized by "Win with Black Women" and featured over 140 grassroots organizations, including "Latinas for Harris" and "White Dudes for Harris."
The event had an audience of 400 people in Oakland County, Michigan, with Governor Gretchen Whitmer also speaking. Celebrities like Chris Rock, Bryan Cranston, and Julia Roberts joined virtually.
