On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the Golden State will be producing their own "low cost" insulin because "people should not go into debt to get life-saving medication.”
One of the only things Newsom has ever said that I agree with! Funny how when former President Donald Trump was in office, insulin was affordable. Yet now that President Joe Biden is in the White House, it isn't.
Newsom explained that the state budget he recently signed includes a $100 million contract for California to "make [its] own insulin at a cheaper price, close to at-cost, and to make it available to all.”

He allotted $5o million to the insulin development and the other $50 million will go towards a manufacturing facility for the drug, which will also be located in California and “will provide new, high-paying jobs and a stronger supply chain.”

“Nothing epitomizes market failures more than the cost of insulin,” Newsom said. “Many Americans experience out-of-pocket costs ranging anywhere from $300 to $500 per month for this life-saving drug.”
