Every year, around 35 million kids in the U.S. set out for trick-or-treating on Halloween. Research indicates that each of these youngsters might ingest up to three cups of sugar from their candy haul. Dr. Kevin Sands, a renowned cosmetic dentist from Beverly Hills, California, notes that while no candy is good for dental health, certain varieties can be more harmful than others.
Sands shared a list of candies that should be avoided altogether. Here's the list:
Dr. Sands cautions that jawbreakers and lollipops can be especially harmful to dental health.
"These candies don't just pose a risk of chipping or cracking your teeth if bitten down on too hard, but their prolonged presence in your mouth provides bacteria with a long sugar feast," he said.
"This can potentially lead to cavities."
Sands mentioned that taffy and caramels can pose significant dental challenges.
"Their sticky nature means they often get lodged in the nooks and crannies of the teeth, making them difficult to remove even after brushing," he said. "These sugar residues can promote bacteria growth and tooth decay."
The dentist warned that while sour candies may tantalize the taste buds, they also bring a concerning level of acidity.
"Many sour candies have a pH level dangerously close to battery acid," Sands pointed out. "Continual exposure to such acidity can cause the enamel to break down, leading to sensitivity and other dental issues."
While sugar-free candies may appear to be a dental-safe option, the dentist pointed out that they often have citric acid. This ingredient can erode enamel even without the presence of sugar.
Chewy candies such as nougat and toffee can adhere to teeth, creating a favorable environment for detrimental bacteria.
"These bacteria can then produce acids that erode enamel and cause tooth decay," Sands pointed out.
He then pointed out the following candies as better options: chocolate, powdered candy, Smarties, yogurt-covered raisins, nuts, mini packs of popcorn and sugar-free gum.
