A New York-based company has started pulling soft serve ice cream cups from the shelves in 19 states, including the District of Columbia, due to potential Listeria contamination.
Real Kosher Ice Cream issued a recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website this past Wednesday, indicating that the recall concerns all flavor variants of its Soft Serve On The Go cups dated Aug. 4 or prior. The notice specified that there are six distinct flavors available in 8-ounce packs.
Prior to this recall, two individuals - one from New York and another from Pennsylvania - were hospitalized due to illnesses. The notification mentioned that one individual became sick after consuming a Soft Serve On The Go cup. A subsequent test of a sample from that cup by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
Consuming foods tainted with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can result in listeriosis, an infection that is responsible for about 260 deaths every year, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The health agency further mentions that this infection predominantly affects "pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 and older, and individuals with compromised immune systems."
As of Wednesday, the notice clarified that there have been no deaths related to the recalled ice cream items.
These recalled products might have been acquired by consumers from cafeterias, supermarkets, or local convenience stores in a range of locations including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C.
The FDA's notice urged people not to consume the affected items. Instead, they suggested either discarding the Soft Serve On The Go cups or returning them to their place of purchase.

Real Kosher Ice Cream mentioned on their website that they initiated the recall of Soft Serve On The Go cups, emphasizing that "our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our customers."
The company further clarified, "Soft Serve on the Go Cups are manufactured at their own dedicated facility." They also noted, "No other products are affected by this recall."
In light of the issue, both the FDA and Real Kosher Ice Cream have paused the production and distribution of the soft serve ice cream cups, as shared in the recall notification.
